A fuel may be defined as any combustible substance which on burning in presence of oxygen evolved large amount of heat energy.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A FUEL

(1) High calorific

(2) Ignition temperature lowest

(3) Moisture content least

(4) Non combustible matter content least

(5) Velocity of combustion moderate

(6) Products of combustion should not be harmful ,On burning should not give out objectionable and harmful gases like Co,So₂, H₂S, PH₃, and CH_4.

(7)Low Cost

(8) Smokeless

(9) Control of the process : It can be started or stopped easily.

(10) Easy to transport

(11) Low storage cost

(12) Uniform size.
